This training is designed to provide instruction and practice in the administration, scoring, and interpretation of the Child and Adolescent Trauma Screen – CATS (DSM-5). Training participants will learn techniques for integrating assessment results into therapeutic sessions with caregivers and children. Specific instruction will be provided in the incorporation of assessment findings into TF-CBT.
Attendees will be taught methods for tailoring treatment plans to assessment results and using on-going assessment to track treatment progress. Additional measures to assess for child trauma and associated posttraumatic stress symptoms will be briefly highlighted.
Also covered in this training is a brief overview on the Components for Enhancing Clinician Experience and Reducing Trauma (CE-CERT) model. Developed by Dr. Brian Miller, CE-CERT is a skills-based approach to improving provider well-being and effectiveness in working with traumatized clients.
3 CEUs are awarded for training participation.
Training Prerequisite
- Master’s level therapist or higher OR in graduate level psychology training program
Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is a short-term, evidence-based treatment for children, ages 3 to 18, who have experienced trauma and their caregivers. This components-based psychotherapy model incorporates trauma-sensitive interventions with cognitive-behavioral, family and humanistic principles. TF-CBT is empirically supported for use with youth impacted by trauma and co-occurring mental health problems. It is designated as a Model Program by SAMHSA and the National Child Traumatic Stress Network and has received the highest scientific rating as a Well-Supported Effective Practice by the California Evidence-Based Clearinghouse for Child Welfare.
The Introductory TF-CBT training provides therapists with a comprehensive understanding of TF-CBT as well as hands-on practice opportunities. This training, which is conducted by approved national TF-CBT trainers, is designed to meet the National TF-CBT Certification Program Introductory TF-CBT Training requirement. Introductory trainings are limited to 35 participants to support a personalized learning experience.
12 CEUs are awarded for training participation.
Consultation is required to complete TF-CBT training. Following completion of the Introductory TF-CBT training, therapists will participate in a series of 14 one-hour TF-CBT consultation calls to support model learning and application.

This training will provide a thorough overview on the Components for Enhancing Clinician Experience and Reducing Trauma (CE-CERT) model. Developed by Dr. Brian Miller, CE-CERT is a skills-based approach to improving provider well-being and effectiveness in working with traumatized clients. Drawing from what is known about trauma impacts and treatment, CE-CERT posits that secondary traumatic stress is not developed in response to mere exposure to others’ trauma stories, but occurs when feeling overwhelmed or helpless. In contrast to self-care strategies that require the individual to engage in a restorative practice after-work, the CE-CERT model proposes micro-interventions done throughout the day. The five core components of CE-CERT: Experiential Engagement, Reducing Rumination, Conscious Narrative, Reducing Emotional Labor, and Parasympathetic Recovery, and the acquirable skills within each will be taught through both didactic and experiential activities.
