Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is a short-term, evidence-based treatment for children, ages 3 to 18, who have experienced trauma and their caregivers. This components-based psychotherapy model incorporates trauma-sensitive interventions with cognitive-behavioral, family and humanistic principles. TF-CBT is empirically supported for use with youth impacted by trauma and co-occurring mental health problems. It is designated as a Model Program by SAMHSA and the National Child Traumatic Stress Network and has received the highest scientific rating as a Well-Supported Effective Practice by the California Evidence-Based Clearinghouse for Child Welfare.
Day 1: CE-CERT Overview
This training will provide a thorough overview on the Components for Enhancing Clinician Experience and Reducing Trauma (CE-CERT) model. Developed by Dr. Brian Miller, CE-CERT is a skills-based approach to improving provider well-being and effectiveness in working with traumatized clients. Drawing from what is known about trauma impacts and treatment, CE-CERT posits that secondary traumatic stress is not developed in response to mere exposure to others’ trauma stories, but occurs when feeling overwhelmed or helpless. In contrast to self-care strategies that require the individual to engage in a restorative practice after-work, the CE-CERT model proposes micro-interventions done throughout the day.
Day 2: Assessment of Trauma-Exposed Children
This training is designed to provide instruction and practice in the administration, scoring, and interpretation of the UCLA PTSD Reaction Index (DSM-IV version).
Training participants will learn techniques for integrating assessment results into therapeutic sessions with caregivers and children. Specific instruction will be provided in the incorporation of assessment findings into Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy.
Day 4-6: Introduction to Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TF-CBT)
The Introductory TF-CBT training provides therapists with a comprehensive understanding of TF-CBT as well as hands-on practice opportunities. The training is designed to meet the introductory training requirements for the National TF-CBT Therapist Certification Program. Registration for training also requires participating in consultation. Consultation is key in learning any new treatment model, as it provides case specific feedback and ideas from experts in the treatment. Consultation is provided through a series of 14 conference calls on Zoom.
